IAR for MSP430, full name IAR Embedded Workbench for MSP430, is a powerful professional integrated development environment. It is a professional development tool developed for single chip computer users. The software includes many practical functions, such as project management, configuration development environment, compiler creation, customization of specific programming schemes, etc.
As you can see, there isn’t much difference. You just need to include
io430.h
header file and disable the MSP430 watchdog at the very beginning of your main()
function. Sweet! But where does the printf()
‘s output go to? This is where it gets interesting.When you compile and run the HelloWorld program for the desktop computer (be it a Mac, or Linux, or Windows), the program will print the “Hello World!” message on your console (also known as ‘terminal’, ‘command window’ or ‘shell’). Obviously, the LaunchPad has none of those. So, the answer to this question is… “it depends”.
Most embedded development systems, such as IAR Embedded Workbench (EW), for example, provide standard output redirection. This feature allows to redirect output of
printf()
and other members of the Standard IO Library to debug output. Where that output shows up depends on the particular implementation and can be either a file or a window in the Intergrated Development Environment (IDE).Here’s how it works in IAR EW. First, open Project Properties dialog and make sure to set the “Printf formatter” option to “Tiny”:
Also, make sure you build your project in Debug configuration and select ‘Simulator’ as your debugger driver in Project Options:
Build your project and start the debugger by pressing Ctrl-D:
Now, go to the View menu and click on “Terminal I/O”. A “Terminal I/O” window will appear as shown below (it may be docked next to the debugger’s “Disassembly” window, but you can always move it around).
Now click “Step Over” button on the debugger toolbar twice, until the green cursor rests on the “return 0;” line. You should see “Hello World!” appearing in the “Terminal I/O” window like this:
That’s it! Embedded Workbench redirected standard output from your program to the “Terminal I/O” window. Alternatively, you can redirect standard output to a file. To do this, go to the Debug->Logging menu and click “Set Terminal I/O Log File…” as shown here:
A “Terminal I/O Log File” message box will pop up. Check the “Enable Terminal I/O log file” check box as shown below and hit “Ok” button.
Next, execute your program by pressing a “Go” icon on the debugger toolbar, then exit debugger by pressing “Stop Debugging” icon (red cross) on the toolbar. Now you can open a file

located in your project directory. There you will see the output of your printf()
